The Kalmyk language is descended from the Dorbed and Torghud dialects of Oirat. A large number of Torghud Kalmyks left the Astrakhan steppe in 1770, but the Dorbeds and the remaining Torghuts couldn't join them because they couldn't cross the Volga river.
